This site gives details of not only my own ancestors but many other instances of where the name has been found. There are also some theories as to the derivation of the name and its many variants which can now be found worldwide.
The main area of research is in Suffolk, England particularly Stoke Ash, Wickham Skeith and the surrounding area. I am indebted to Peter Ellis whose own research provided a lot of data when I was starting out and at a time when there was little in the way of data online.
There are Australian cousins following the emigration of Samman Lummis to Victoria in 1853 from Wickham Skeith, Suffolk. Lorraine Nicholson is a direct descendant of Samman and would welcome news from others interested in the Lummis name. Please use the link on my name below.
If you are interested in the Lummis name in Canada then take a look at the family history of John Lummis who went to Canada from Laxfield, Suffolk in 1836. (This site disappeared in 2009 - the link now takes you to an archived copy)
The Lummis name in the USA derives from Edward and Joseph Loomes who emigrated in 1635 from Essex or Suffolk and initially settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. No connection has been made between the Lummis name in England to the families of Edward and Joseph Loomes. For more details of the American family go to Loomis Families of America and if your name is Lomas then have a look at The Lomas Family.
The last update to this website was in 2014 as, following the demise of The Master Genealogist, I have changed the software used to maintain my database to Family Historian. This gave me the opportunity to review a lot of the data as well as adding over 1,000 names, mainly relating to the 20th century. Any personal data of living people has been restricted to names and parentage only. Most of the data has come from freely available official sources on the internet and in no way breaches anyone's privacy.
